Copper sulphide rich leach residue from nickel refining is a marketable product and may be treated by smelting. In looking for another refining technology for its valorisation, the raw material was characterised and suitability of medium-temperature sulphate-based pressure leaching was tested for this purpose.

view more202368 · Copper oxide minerals are the products of weathering and hydrolysis of primary copper sulfide (e.g., chalcopyrite), mainly including malachite, azurite, chrysocolla, arnimite, tenorite, and cuprite. Copper sulfide is the main raw mineral material for copper, and its copper output accounts for over 80% of total output.
view moreUnrefined or “blister” copper is about 99 percent pure when obtained from the ore, but it is desirable to increase this to 99.95 percent if the copper is to be used in electrical wiring. Even small concentrations of impurities noticeably lower copper’s electrical conductivity. Such a high degree of purity can be obtained by electrolytic refining in a cell similar to that …

Minerals theoretically contain large amount of copper, but actually ores contain only small amounts of copper due to presence of other sulphides and gangue minerals. Actually, a sulphide ore that contains 0.5–2% Cu is considered as good for extraction after concentration.

The impure copper is made anode and strip of pure copper are made cathode. On passing the current as shown in the diagram, the pure copper from the anode dissolves into an electrolyte.

Plant operations may be either batch, semi-continuous, or fully continuous to produce blister copper or other end product.
